Eng. V.R. Sena Peiris - President

RoadEng. Sena Peiris is a Mechanical and Industrial Engineer residing in Sri Lanka. He graduated with Bachelor of Science of Engineering (Hons) degree and has 35 years experience in the Sri Lankan industrial sector. Starting his carrier in 1974 as a mechanical engineer at Sugar industry EngPeiris became the chief engineer of sugar industries in 1977. He later served in Textile, Petroleum, Plastics fields holding several key positions from Chief Engineer to General Manager. His specializes in Thermal Energy and Environment. Eng.Peiris is a Authorized Inspector of Pressure vessels and a certified energy auditor. EngPeiris has a post graduate diploma in Industrial Engineering too. EngPeiris is one of the pioneering CP consultants in Sri Lanka. Having followed a CP auditor training program he served as a consultant to industries on CP. He also is a certified ISO 14001 EMS auditor/consultant. In 2002 he became the first Director of National Cleaner Production Centre and serves in that capacity to date. EngPeiris was the president of Cleaner Production Professionals’ Forum of Sri Lanka, ISO 14001 EMS Users Association of Sri Lanka, an executive board member of Sri Lanka Energy Manager’s Association (SLEMA).Also he is the president of Asia Pacific Roundtable for Sustainable Consumption and Production

Prof. Ajith de Alwis - Advisor

RoadProf. Ajith de Alwis focuses upon research areas that include ‘Triple Bottom Line approach for the Process Industry’, Bioenergy systems, Industrial Biotechnology, Integrated Solid Waste Management, Food Processing Systems and Cleaner Production and Clean Technologies. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge, UK following his B.Sc. (Eng) degree at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka.  He also has a MBA from Postgraduate Institute of Management, Univ of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka.  Elected as a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences Sri Lanka in 2010.

A Professor at the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Moratuwa, he is also the Director of the UOM-Cargills Food Process Development Incubator. Prof. de Alwis is a member of Cambridge Philosophical and Commonwealth Societies, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Editorial Board of the European Journal of Food &Bioproducts and the Lanka Biogas Association – of which he is the founding President. He was a Post-doctoral research fellow at University of Reading and a Visiting Scientist at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore.

Recipient of Danckwerts-Maxwell Prize from University of Cambridge, Senior Moulton Medal from Institute of Chemical Engineers (UK) and Research Award of University of Moratuwa (9 times).

Being a member of the committee drafting National Biotechnology Policy and National Nanotechnology Policy.Serves in many national committees including the CEA’s committee on Implementation of Basel Convention, NSF’s National Nanotechnology Committee (Chairman) and SLSI Management Committee on Standards.  Served as a Science Team Leader at Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology from inception to 2011 and currently the Sri Lankan team leader on establishing a regulatory framework for Nanotechnology in Sri Lanka a IDRC Project covering India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Eng. Samantha Kumarasena

Eng Samantha Kumarasena passed out from University of Moratuwa with BSc (Engineering) degree in 1994. He holds Masters in Textile Studies and MBA in Management of Technology. He has been qualified as a Lead Auditor in ISO 14001 Environment Management Systems, ISO 9001 QMS and OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System. He has served as the Deputy Director of National Cleaner Production Centre for more than eight years. He serves as a Visiting lecturer to several universities in Sri Lanka. He has been instrumental in forming Environmental Management Systems Users and Promoters Association in Sri Lanka in 2009 and served as the Secretary of the Association for two terms.

Eng. Dhammika Welhenge

Dhammika Welhenge received his initial training at the petroleum refinery and graduated as a Chemical & Process Engineer in 1979 from the University of Moratuwa. He received the corporate membership of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka in 1985.

He has been working in the National Salt Corporation and National Engineering Research & Development Centre and took over the position of the Superintendent Ammonia plant in the State Fertilizer Manufacturing Corporation. He was involved in the operation of Ammonia/Urea Plant from 1979 and was engaged in process plant commissioning, de-bottlenecking, operation, maintenance, start-ups, shutdowns, trouble shooting, etc and finally plant decommissioning and mothballing in 1988. Then he took over the post of the Factory manager of the Sulphuric acid / Alum plant in 1988.

He joined Unilever Sri Lanka as a process engineer in 1991 and taken position of the plant manager of soap plant, edible oil refinery, PP manufacturing plants etc. He was appointed as the Country SHE Coordinator for Unilever in 1994. He was also appointed as a regional SHE auditor for Unilever PLC Asia/pacific region in 1996. He was involved in Implementation of ISRS standards in 1994 and Framework Standards in 2000 across all sites in Sri Lanka. He led the setting up of ISO 14001 program in Unilever Sri Lanka, working both as the MR and the consultant. Behaviour Based Safety program was driven in Unilever Sri Lanka as the focal point. He took over the post of Chief Engineer in Unilever Sri Lanka in 2006.

He took over the position of Country HSE Coordinator in Shell Gas Lanka Limited in 2009. HSE management covered the LPG terminal (CBM), LPG filling plant and road transport. While practicing as a Chemical & Process engineer, he worked as a visiting lecturer in the department of Chemical & Process Engineering, University of Moratuwa (from 1980 to 2009). He has also worked as the Director, Industrial Training -Faculty of engineering University of Moratuwa. He has been elected as the Chairman Chemical Engineering Section of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka three times. He was the Executive Secretary of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka in 2008. He serves as a member of the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System advisory committee of the Sri Lanka Standards Institution.

Mr. Randeewa Malalasooriya

RoadGraduated in BSc with Environment Management minor by the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and obtain MBA from University of Wales. Lead Auditor and certified trainer for ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 18001,ISO 22,000  and 5S.

Started the carrier as Management Consultant, implemented various ISO and other management systems in high profile companies not only in Sri Lanka, but also in Maldives, Singapore etc. Presently working as Business development Manager at Geocycle and Geocycle is business unit of Holcim (Lanka) Limited which established to provide environmental responsible disposal for industrial wastes.

At Holcim, started the journey as Project Manager and internal consultant of the implement of Integrated Management System at Geocycle while jointly holding the responsibility of key accounts management of few key customers. Presently as a Business Development Manager, responsible for strategic & business planning, marketing & communication, compliance responsibilities in the areas such as health & safety, environment, system quality and license & permitting.

Eng. Lakmini Edirisnghe

An engineering graduate with specialty in Chemical and Process Engineering is the National Expert at the Centre in Sound Chemical Management with over five years of experience;She has obtained aMasters degree in Chemical & Process Engineering from University of Moratuwa. Currently serve as the National Coordinator for Chemical Leasing and she also is a certified Cleaner Production auditor/consultant.She has presented several research papers in national and international symposiums. Presently reading for Chartered Engineering in Environmental field at Institute of Engineers Sri Lanka.
